Descendants of Jabez and Susannah Carter Ellis

Jabez Stephen Ellis was born ca. 1830 in Saratoga, New York.

Generation I.  His mother, Sarah Adams, was born in Bethersden, Kent, England in 1790 and  arrived in the US in 1826  her husband, John Ellis, Sr. who was b. 1789 in Smarden, Kent.  They married in 1810.  (Sarah’s father is listed in the marriage notice as Edward A. Adams; John’s father is William E. Ellis.)

John and Sarah Ellis sailed for America on the ship Xenophon from London with 6 children, arriving in New York after a voyage of 7 weeks and 3 days.  The ship manifest lists these family members:

A biography of John, Jr. lists other children as Elizabeth, Jabez, and Sarah.  It would be inferred that these 3 children were born in New York.  The biography says that the Ellis family settled first in Schenectady, New York on a rented farm, where they lived until 1831.  The family then moved to neighboring Saratoga, New York, where John, Sr. rented another farm.  In 1835, the family moved west to Chautauqua, New York, where John purchased a farm.  This family is found on the 1840 census in Mina.
